Introduction to Unity 3D.
Build virtual 3D worlds in this hands-on introduction to the free Unity 3D game engine including physics, interactivity and scripting in C#. What is the course about? Unity 3D is a free video game development engine that has powered hundreds of releases, including popular successes such as Pokémon Go, Kerbal Space Programme and League of Legends. It has also been used to produce simulations, CGI and interactive art. This course introduces the main elements of Unity 3D, assuming no prior experience with 3D rendering or programming. Although we will often focus on topics related to game design, the course is particularly intended for artists who want to explore Unity’s wider possibilities. The course includes an introduction to scripting with C# suitable for complete beginners to programming. If you have some relevant experience in this area you’ll be able to take your work further in class.
What will we cover?
- The Unity user interface. • Creating 3D objects, textures, materials and lighting. • Using Unity’s built-in physics engine to produce simulations. • Scripting user interactions to create a simple game.
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to…
- Confidently navigate the Unity user interface. • Design and create a simple arcade game, physics simulation or virtual environment. • Work with GameObjects, Materials, Textures, Lights, Cameras, Colliders, RigidBody physics, audio, UI components and Prefabs. • Write C# scripts to perform simple tasks (e.g. player movement, collision detection). • Build your project into a finished executable file.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is for beginners; willingness to experiment and a sense of adventure are more important than prior knowledge. If you have some programming experience you will be able to go further with some aspects of the class; if not, this course is a good way to started.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course will be delivered by a mixture of presentation (mostly practical demonstration) and structured game-development activities.
